The stars of Killing Eve portray a mother who is a touch too concerned about her children’s lives.
Sandra Oh, star of Grey’s Anatomy and Killing Eve, is returning to animation with the release of the first trailer for her new Pixar film today.
Turning Red follows 13-year-old Mei Lee (Rosalie Chiang), a teen with an extraordinary ability: she transforms into a massive red panda whenever she becomes very excited or anxious. Unfortunately, her emotions are frequently heightened.
The first trailer for the new animated film, which you can watch above, shows us just what makes Mei anxious, as she tries to focus on finishing some quadratic problems only to be interrupted by a note from another student informing her that her mother is outside.
Ming (Oh), Mei’s devoted but slightly domineering mother, is hiding behind a tree outside the school, and when a security guard approaches to urge her to leave, Ming becomes aggressive.
Stressed Mei transforms into a red panda in a massive cloud of pink smoke, forcing her to flee across the rooftops with Ming chasing her.
Mei ultimately calms down at home and transforms back into herself, only for the thrill of the transformation to drive her back into red panda shape.
Domee Shi, who won an Oscar for Best Animated Short Film for her 2018 Pixar short Bao, about a lonely Chinese-Canadian mother who gets a second chance at motherhood after a steamed bao bun she creates comes to life, directs Turning Red.
Oh will also be seen in the Netflix comedy series The Chair, in which she plays Dr. Ji-Yoon Kim, the first person of color to chair the English department at Pembroke University.
zurning Red will be released in cinemas on March 11, 2022
