“During a pandemic, you give them three performances, and they give you five.”
Krista Vernoff, the creator of Grey’s Anatomy, has spoken out after her new program Rebel was canceled after only one season.
The ABC drama, starring Katey Sagal, was only five episodes into its run when the network decided not to renew it last week.
Vernoff replied to a story suggesting the show’s lineage may garner a bigger audience over time in a since-deleted tweet, asking (via Deadline): “Wouldn’t you believe it if I told you? During a pandemic, you give them three shows, and they give you five episodes. Cool, cool, cool. That’s great.”
Sagal, who portrays Annie ‘Rebel’ Bello in the series, also thanks fans for their support in an Instagram post regarding the cancellation.
“The plug has been pulled,” she wrote in part, “and I feel and hear your disappointment.” “I totally support your position.
“It was a shock and a disappointment to learn that there would be no season 2 based on the reception to the first four airings.
“It takes time for things to sink in,” she continued. “Rebel depicts the narrative of a woman who stands up for what she believes in; the show has heart and purpose, is humorous and emotional, and we, the actors, are baffled by ABC’s decision.”
She urged supporters to keep fighting in the hopes that it might land on a different network, as well as promoting the #SaveRebel petition.
“Fight for what you want, make people listen,” Sagal continued, “and in our instance, if our program can find another, more acceptable spot to land, we will do the happy dance.” “If not, at the very least, we gave it our all and made our voices known, which is the message behind Rebel! Speak Up!! Always!!”
“There’s an irony to a program by and for strong women who don’t quit being canceled,” Erin Brockovich, whose life was the inspiration for the program, tweeted.
“Don’t worry, #Rebelabc isn’t going anywhere!” She lives on in each and every one of the tens of thousands that reached out this weekend and who are still fighting for their communities. This movement, and our voices, will never be silenced!”
Rebel follows Sagal’s character, a blue-collar lawyer with no law degree who is passionate about the things she works for and the people she loves.
Season 17 of Grey’s Anatomy airs on ABC in the United States on Sky Witness in the United Kingdom, with select episodes also available on NOW. Seasons 1 through 16 is available to watch on Disney+.
