Fans of Coronation Street were heartbroken in 2016 when Kylie Platt, a character, was brutally stabbed to death.
She was preparing to leave the Street after the villain Callum Logan was killed in her home, but she ran into Clayton Hibbs and was fatally stabbed while defending Gemma Winter.
But even after permanently leaving the cobbles, actress Paula Lane’s acting career was far from done.
She has had a long-standing career in theater and appeared briefly in the popular BBC historical drama Call the Midwife.
On the fifth anniversary of Kylie’s passing, the Daily Star published an inside look at Paula’s life after she left Corrie.
Paula actually enjoys a very glossy life, in contrast to her alleged “chavvy” image in Corrie.
She frequently updates her social media fans on what’s happening in her life, most recently posting a subdued bedroom photo to show how her fringe was developing.
In a grey sweater and with natural makeup, Paula appeared youthful, her long lashes elongating her green eyes.
Her brown hair was pulled back from her face by a leopard-print bandana while Paula added the caption: “I was so grateful for a headband when my fringe was growing out! Love my jumper from @neonsheepbarn, which I picked up during a sale. It’s Life, folks!”
Another stylish photo showed Paula posing in a spaghetti-strap grey vest top with her hair in a bouffant style.
She posed next to a vivid blue statue of a cockerel while wearing the ensemble and wearing bright pink lipstick and bare makeup.
In a playful caption, the actress asked, “Do any of you lovely people have a cockerel in your bathroom?”
Paula is wed to a Coronation Street co-star, however many people might not be aware of this.
In a charming wedding held at Leeds Cathedral back in May 2014, she wed her longtime partner Tom Shaw.
Tom first debuted in Corrie as Fiz Stape’s friend Kim Vaughan in April and June of 2017 before reprising the role in May and June of 2018.
His personality Kim and Fiz grew up together in the same nursing home, but they lost touch for many years before getting back together, much to the chagrin of Fiz’s former lover Tyrone.
Tom has acted in other serial opera roles as well, including Tim in Hollyoaks in 2014 and PC Craig Bishop in Emmerdale for eight episodes from 2014 to 2019.
Additionally, he has made guest appearances on Doctors, Casualty, and The Inbetweeners.
When her husband moved back to Weatherfield in 2018, Paula was distraught, tweeting: “When @ITVCorrie scripts come in the letterbox then I realized they’re not for me! Over to you, Sir Tom Shaw!
Penny, age 4, and Arthur, age 6, are Paula and Tom’s two joint children.
Paula was astonished when her daughter’s friend told her that she was “too overweight” to play a game in May of this year.
Paula posted on Twitter to raise awareness of Mental Health Awareness Week: “My 4-year-old daughter told me last night that a kid who wasn’t much older told her she was too overweight to play their game.
My brain was spinning. Let’s instill kindness in our kids.
At the moment, many of Paula’s 230,000 fans jumped to her defense.
Paula usually keeps her family’s life very private, but she spoke openly to OK! Magazine during Penny’s pregnancy and birth in 2016.
She said to the newspaper: “We used a birthing pool. This time, I thought the space had been well purified. Just everything seemed to fit.
“Arthur’s birth was traumatizing but magical. The situation this time was completely different. I had a great sense of serenity and control.
“Look, your baby is there in the water,” the midwives exclaimed. She was swimming in the water with her eyes open when I turned to look at her.
Although I’m not saying it was simple, the birth was perfect.
And it appears that the pair will be adding to their family once more, as Paula revealed earlier this month that they would be adopting a dog.
Paula wrote: “Met these beautiful kids today. Shared this adorable black-and-white photo of me and my hubby holding two small black bundles of fur.
Well, one of them will be returning to our home in October!
Call the Midwife stint
When Kylie left Corrie, Paula’s acting career didn’t come to an end.
She appeared on stage in a touring production of the hit musical Kinky Boots in 2019.
Additionally, she had an appearance in the 2018 Corrie-themed play Be More Martyn, which followed the life of Martyn Hett, a devoted fan of Coronation Street.
Martyn tragically perished in the Manchester Arena explosion in May 2017, and the play honoring his life featured statements from interviews with his closest friends.
He previously gained notoriety for having a leg tattoo of Deidre Barlow from Corrie.
In the popular BBC historical drama Call the Midwife, Paula also played pregnant Vera Sands, stating she was “over the moon” to get the role.
Paula admitted as she spoke with RadioTimes: “I was waiting for a long time and I thought, ‘Oh, maybe it’s gone. However, I was extremely fortunate in that the director and I had previously collaborated, she was aware of my work ethic, and I felt as though I could have a shot here. However, this is certainly not a guarantee.
“Then they announced a few days later that I had been hired. I was therefore really happy.”
For Paula and her family, there “couldn’t have been a finer Christmas present,” she added.
