Coronation Street star Nathan Graham reveals James’ life-changing health diagnosis after collapse

Next week on Coronation Street, James Bailey’s (Nathan Graham) life and career are both in jeopardy due to his sudden fall during a football game.

The game in question pits the very competitive Flying Horse against the Rovers team.

James initially offers to assist Jenny (Sally Ann Matthews) with some training, but following an argument between a cranky Tim (Joe Duttine) and Dev (Jimmi Harkishin), Tim returns to the cobbles, so James fills in.

Soon after the game begins, James raises the stakes, and the Rovers team quickly gains the lead.

James, however, collapses on the ground as the final whistle approaches and is taken to the hospital.

Fortunately, as actor Nathan Graham would clarify, his character makes it through the collapse, but subsequently receives terrible news that will change his entire existence.

James is informed that he has cardiomyopathy.

He is then informed that in order to stop further cardiac arrests, an implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (ICD) must be fitted to him. I suppose James has [Christian] Eriksen as a point of comparison since as we all witnessed at the European Championships, Eriksen experienced much the same issue and was later fitted with an ICD.

Obviously, having surgery is a scary experience. But I believe he also understands that going through this process offers him faith and hope that he will be alright and regain his health.

James is hopeful that he will soon be fully recovered, but he can’t help but wonder what this will mean for his football future.

If football and sports are all he has ever known, I don’t think he will be able to picture himself working for his father or serving customers at the Rovers, says Nathan.

The last time he was injured, he earned his coaching certification, so that is an option. Though he would want to return to playing once he has recovered, that decision will also be made by Weatherfield County and the management, so it is a worrying moment for him.
