Pat Phelan, the notorious villain of Coronation Street, is no longer a living presence on the cobbles, but if actor Connor McIntyre has anything to do with it, his presence could return.
Connor, who portrayed the menacing Pat on the serial for two seasons between 2013 and 2018, told Inside Soap that he would love to return in the future.
But, since Pat died after being stabbed by Anna Windass, following his believed death after plunging into the sea, Connor would not be returning as his prior role.
— instead, he’d like to play Matt, Pat’s fictitious twin brother, who would be far gentler and sweeter than Pat.
“Wow, there’s a challenge,” the actor said of the concept. “In a beautiful way, the tables would be turned; nobody on the Street would like Pat Phelan’s twin brother, would they? They’d all treat him horribly!”
“However, what if Matt was genuinely nice?” It would take a lot of guts from the cast and crew of the show to do something like this, but what a shocker.
Could you image Pat’s ex-wife Eileen Grimshaw’s expression? I’ll tell you something… Kid, I’m in! “
Phelan’s reign of terror, during which he killed four people, “went beyond my expectations,” according to Connor.
“I was just signed for three episodes at first, and it would have been intimidating if I’d known we were going to construct this villain from the start!” ” he explained.
“But I couldn’t have asked for anything more. Each time I received the scripts, I thought to myself, “Wow, we’re really stretching the boundaries.””
Despite criticism from some viewers that Phelan’s scenes had gotten too dark, the actor, who has also been in Ackley Bridge, said he was glad that the serial stretched the boundaries with his plot.
“I felt it was incredibly bold of him to do that stuff before Watershed,” he added. “I remember in the early days of Phelan, people would say, ‘Who is this guy? Get rid of him, he’s nasty!'” he continued. “As a result, the producers were quite brave to go on a ride with Phelan and risk losing some of the very charming personalities that he eliminated.”
We’d want to see how the folks of Street react when they see Phelan’s face again.
